BIS Certification

BIS Certification Consultant in Mumbai

Digital Global Compliance (DGC) helps manufacturers, importers and brand owners in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and across India get BIS certification, covering the ISI Mark, CRS registration and FMCS, with end-to-end documentation, testing and audit support.

Quick answer: BIS certification is the conformity approval issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards, India's national standards body under the BIS Act, 2016. If your product is covered by a Quality Control Order (QCO) or the CRS order, it cannot be manufactured, imported or sold in India without it. Depending on the product you will need an ISI Mark licence (Scheme-I), CRS registration for notified electronics and IT goods (Scheme-II), or FMCS if you are a foreign manufacturer. DGC, based in Nalasopara East, manages the full process for clients across Mumbai and Maharashtra.

Which BIS scheme does your product need?

The first, and most important, step is identifying the correct Indian Standard (IS) and scheme for your product. Applying under the wrong one is the most common reason for delays.

  • ISI Mark (Product Certification Scheme): for domestic and industrial products such as electric fans, washing machines, mixers and hand blenders, toys, office and general-purpose chairs, stainless-steel utensils, pressure cookers, cables, switches and PVC pipes. Read our ISI Mark guide.
  • CRS registration (Compulsory Registration Scheme): for notified electronics and IT products such as power banks, mobile phones, adaptors, LED lamps and drivers, laptops, CCTV cameras and lithium-ion batteries. Read our CRS guide.
  • FMCS (Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme): for overseas factories that make ISI-scheme products for sale in India.

BIS certification process, step by step

  1. Product and standard identification: we confirm the applicable IS number, the QCO status and the right scheme.
  2. Factory readiness check: for ISI and FMCS, we review your manufacturing process, in-house testing equipment and quality-control staff against the BIS Scheme of Inspection and Testing.
  3. Documentation: we prepare the application, factory details, process flow, quality-control plan, test-equipment list and marking or label artwork.
  4. Sample testing: we coordinate testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory.
  5. Online application: we file the application on the BIS portal, with fee payment.
  6. BIS factory inspection: required for ISI and FMCS. We prepare your team and records before the BIS officer's visit.
  7. Grant of licence or registration: you can then apply the Standard Mark on the product.
  8. After the grant: we handle surveillance, renewals, adding new models or scope, and any changes to the licence.

Any manufacturer, and indirectly any importer or seller, whose product is notified under a Quality Control Order or the CRS order needs BIS certification before the product is manufactured, imported, stored or sold in India. Voluntary BIS certification is also available for many other products.

ISI Mark certification typically takes 45–60 working days once a complete application is filed. CRS registration usually takes about 30 working days after the lab test report is issued. Actual time depends on lab queues, inspection scheduling and any queries from BIS.

The ISI Mark (Scheme-I) covers mainly non-electronic and electrical products. It needs a BIS factory inspection and in-house testing facilities. CRS (Scheme-II) covers notified electronics and IT goods. It is based on testing each model at a BIS-recognised lab and registering online, and usually needs no factory inspection.

The BIS licence or registration is granted to the manufacturer, meaning the factory. Importers and brand owners sell under the manufacturer's licence. Foreign factories apply through FMCS (ISI products) or CRS, with an Authorised Indian Representative. DGC helps importers coordinate this with their overseas supplier.
